Default Most versatile PVP character?

I'm going to preface that a most unacceptable answer would be Monk.

I'm thinking about making a PvE character with the intent of having it AB/HA/RA/CM viable, but also it needs to actually be useful in those situations. With that said, I'm wondering what the most versatile class for pvp is? (Aka most useful, most variations on builds, etc.)

Honestly, the only answers you will get are biased, and all opinions.

Every character has a set niche. Monks are good in all places, but you will be playing the same builds overall. Warriors have a fair few builds avaliable to them, but they are somewhat useless in JQ/FA. There is no all around perfect character that is excellent at everything while having a ton of options avaliable.

I would say either Warrior or Monk.

Both excel in their areas of expertise, and are "required" for competitive PvP. You mention you want to do AB/CM/RA, where "anything" works, but for HA, most teams need at least 1 Warrior, and at least 2 Monks. This doesn't account for some gimmick teams, or other healers such as E/Rt Prisms, but you'll have a lot of options.

You will be limited in your build options if you join a PUG, as you will be expected to play meta builds unless it's "byob - bring your own build" or randomway for HA. Get with your Guild/Alliance and come up with something that works for you.

EDIT:

Warriors really are somewhat bad in Jade Quarry, which is not to say they are useless, just that other classes outperform the Warrior in just about all possible roles. I disagree with this poster regarding FA, but if you're leaning towards JQing a lot, stay away from Warrior unless you want to become extremely creative.

I'd say ele but you don't have a lot of variation in builds. You can usually be E/Rt healer for sway, or you can be a fire ele with a utility skill. (SoC, Make Haste, Warding, Resilient.) On rare occasion you might get to play a Mirror of Ice ele in HA.

For any other pvp you can almost run anything you'd like and be fairly successful.

Warrior is good if you can strat call/call spikes and you like being snared and blinded all day.

No class wins all, but...

JQ-> PvE
FA-> PvE
AB-> Joke arena. Anything works.
RA-> Joke arena. Anything works.
TA-> Monk
HA-> Ranger
GvG-> Warrior

Monks and warriors are probably your best bets
But, I'll go ahead and throw Mesmer out there.
You see them in HA, FA, RA, TA, GvG, but not JQ.
They are perfect for offensive/defensive support.
Good mesmers can be a grat addition to any PvP team

I'm thinking either Necro, Ranger, or Mesmer.

I don't enjoy playing warrior, and as I already said, Monk is unacceptable.

The reason I say Necro is because its got a lot of different ways to go in its builds. Mesmer is sort of iffy, I've played quite a lot, and I'm not sure if I totally love the character.

Necros are great, used in just about any pvp team with a wide variety of builds.

You won't be in every GvG or HA team depending on the meta, but necro is a borderline overpowered class and it won't be difficult to find a spot with necro as your main.

Additionally, it's difficult to find skilled midline casters sometimes, so if you like it and you're good it will really help the team at least as much as a good war/monk/ranger.

Plus if you want to do something else, it's easy to reroll.

Ranger is surprisingly similar to warrior, mesmer is a bit like necro but tangibly different. Mesmer has an advantage for GvG, though, which is that they typically run most necro or ele builds using mesmer primary for the fast casting.

Ranger is the most versatile player in Guild wars, but judging from your examples of what you want, i'd say you're looking for an ele.

Do a ranger if you want a profession that's playable 99% of the time.

Can't say the same about mesmer

Let me stop you here. Make a PvP character. There is no advantage of PvE characters over PvP-only, actually the PvP-only have it much easier when making equipment as opposed to spending days or weeks just to get the basic set of shields for PvP.

Play PvP first, then figure out what character you like playing enough to make a PvE version.

Ranger, hands down. They've got decent damage, their interrupting capabilities are amazing, possibly even better than the Mesmer's, they can spread poison and bleeding amongst the entire enemy party with ease, they can cripple melee to make their lives hell, they have amazing survivability with Nat Stride, Troll Unguent, and Mend Touch.

They've got a LOT going for them, but they take skill and knowledge of the game and the opposition to play, which I why I typically fail when I try to play one.

I have played PVP a lot. Before I took my break (about a year or two) I was in 200+ ranked guilds. I got R3 when it actually meant something (before the double HA point weekends). I've played tons of pvp, but it was a while ago and now that I'm back I'm trying to get a feel for where the meta is going. That is more what this thread was about. I want to know what classes will actually be useful, because I'm very aware that the meta has shifted drastically.
